WELSH DERBY OPENER FOR IRONMEN

The Ironmen take to the field for the first time on Sunday when they travel to Wrexham to take on welsh rivals North Wales Crusaders.

It’s all change for the Ironmen who will be sporting their new kit and giving debuts to several new recruits.

Ironmen Head Coach Phil Carleton is looking forward to the encounter:-

“Sunday is an exciting time for everyone involved with the club. There has been a lot of change throughout the off-season but we are all fully focused on the start of the new season.”
” With only a limited amount of friendlies we need to give everybody as much game time as we can. With that in mind we’ll be heading up to North Wales with the intention of giving some of the newcomers to the squad a run. I’m sure the majority will go well and put their hands up for the rest of the friendlies and cup games to come.”

Assistant Coach Paul Emanuelli who played in both derby games last season adds

” For me the game offers us an opportunity to test the strength and depth of the squad. With potentially 11 players getting their first shot at playing at this level it will be a young side but they’ve all trained well and earned a shot.”

“Personally its really satisfying to see so many of last years development squad get a taste at this level and I’m confident they will all enjoy the experience and give a good account of themselves.”

“It will be good to catch up with Mike Grady. I’m sure this fixture will mean a lot to him. He’s put together a pretty strong squad on paper and I’m expecting them to do well this year. Crusaders have already got some game time under their belts so it will be a good test for our young squad.”

The away game against Crusaders will be followed by the return which will be the first competitive game for the Ironmen at the Wern Sports Park. The following week sees Super League giants St Helens in town.
