The second pre-season clash between South Wales Ironmen and North Wales Crusaders, the first ever Ironmen match at the Wern Sports Park, kicks off this Sunday at 3:00pm. It was first blood to the Crusaders after a 22-6 victory at the Queensway Stadium but it was the Ironmen youngsters who caught the eye. With just one more pre-season game against St Helens before the competitive action starts Head Coach Phil Carleton will be giving a first run out of the season to several established first teamers.
Welsh internationals Andy Gay Lewis Reece Courtney Davies Christiaan Roets and Connor Farrar come into the starting line up with Chris Davies and Isaac Duffy added to the bench. Dai Evans Ethan Coombs Rhys Gant Richard Jones Shaun Owens Yannick Parker Jordan Sheridan and last weekend’s try scorer Lewys Willacott are all unavailable for selection. Shane Lee Rhys Davies Macauley Harris Richard Bowen and Ryan Lewis are all rested.
Ironmen Assistant Coach Paul Emanuelli is looking forward to the return:-
“Last week really was a decent hit out for us, it gave Phil and myself a chance to test our wider squad and blood lots of youngsters. The energy and enthusiasm they displayed was fantastic and we had our chances to win the game so there were lots of positives to be taken. “
“This week offers us a different challenge altogether. Crusaders will come down knowing we’ll make changes and include a lot more of our senior guys so I’m expecting a totally different game from last week.
It’s going to be great to see Reecey and Andy back in South Wales colours as well as having guys like Roetsy back to captain the side. The challenge for us now is to match the youngsters hunger from last week and hopefully add a few things.”
“We’ve got a few guys missing but hopefully they’ll all be good to get some time against St. Helens next week. It’s going to be a really good day for the club playing our home Welsh derby at our new fantastic facility at the wern sports park. Training has been really intense this week with a real buzz about the place. I think some of the senior guys have been spurred on by the performance the youngsters put in last week. Sunday can’t come quick enough. It should be a cracker”.
